Organic mangoes from Burkina Faso. Part 2!

The mangoes in Burkina Faso are growing well, thanks to the hard work of all growers and the team members involved. They have started harvesting and the first airfreight mangoes already arrived last week in our state-of-the-art warehouse in Poeldijk, The Netherlands. The sea freight mangoes arrive early week 14. During the whole season the mangoes will be loaded on a faster vessel in order to guarantee to our customers better delivery reliability and shelf life. In this article we’re going to tell you about the certifications and the facilities that guarantees the good quality of these delicious organic mangoes.

Mango value chain

Aiming to upgrade the Burkinabe mango value chain, in 2016, OTC launched together with Sanlé its first PPP (Public Private Partnership), which is partly commissioned by the Deutsche Investitions- und Entwiklungsgesellschaft (DEG). For Sanlé it is key to establish a strong managerial promise to supply chain management. These include supplier development actions such as site visits, supplier recognition, and support when/where necessary through knowledge transfer. The company works only with fixed partners, with many already for more than 15 years. This commitment resulted in the certification of 45 Global G.A.P. growers. Among them 30 growers producing solely organic and holding an EU and Bio Suisse certificate for organic farming. Sanlé’s engagement does not stop here. By the end of 2019 it aims to increase the number of certified organic growers with 15 and achieve an ethical certification for all growers.

New mango processing facility

In collaboration with OTC Organics the company has recently built a new mango processing facility, with a sorting line for fresh mangoes, a unit for the processing of dried mangoes and a cooling chamber for almost 90 pallets. The new IFS and HACCP-certified facility creates a unique setting with drying, cooling and sorting of both fresh and dried mangoes under one roof. This expansion has resulted in 60 new jobs.

Supply development

Supply development is one of the focus areas of OTC. It is of great importance for buyers to be able to continue to operate well into the near future. Together with Sanlé we saw the need to improve infrastructure and invest in specific knowledge. In collaboration with the growers, we continuously work on process improvements: from cultivation to sorting and from harvesting methods to conditioning. We expect to be able to increase our export volumes in the coming years and thus expand the group of growers.
